Checking Out Some Social Networking Sites

Social network tied people up through their interested, ideas, friendship, etc. For me, I don’t really use those social networking sites that much because there is always a new social networking site comes out from the time.

I remember in 2003, my first social networking site is Xanga. That time, not a lot of people use social networking site. Now, there are 6,000,000 registered as a Xanga user. Then I started to use Friendster. Friendster is very easy to start to use social networking site. On Friendster’s homepage, there is look very clear and easy to use. It’s show the Popular Members and New Members. After Friendster, I used Hi5. I played Hi5 because most of my friends in Thailand are there. Before, Hi5 dosen’t has Thai language but now it does. It is also pretty to use and posts everything up to your webpage. Then it’s time for MySpace. At this point, I don’t want to have another account anymore. However, I registered it but never use them because my friends moved from Hi5 to MySpace. Somehow, I think that myspace is involve more with the advertising too much. MySpace is “a place for friends.” However, on its homepage, I only see advertisements. Then later, facebook became popular. Of course, I stop to register for an account in there (still stick to Hi5). For me, when I get to facebook.com, I don’t really like it. I didn’t see anything unless I sign in to the account. They should put new members or the latest update or something like that to make me click on those and look at other people’s page. That’s made me close the site (this might just happen to only me that tired to make a new webpage).

Most of the social networking sites that I mentioned are mostly that same. The only slightly different is their features and what kinds of group of people are in there. For example, Thai people are using Friendster and Hi5. MySpace is popular in the United States, Canada and Europe. The main purpose of these sites is to connect people together as the concept of six degree of separation.

Social Networking and Virtual Worlds

What are some ways (corporate and otherwise) that these technologies can be used?
Now a day, social networking and virtual worlds is very useful in our daily life. It is the best way to keep in touch with each other around the world by using internet through the Web 2.0. It is fast and easy for everybody. We can keep our identity private by stay anonymous. We also can make up of a new identity by not telling other our identity at all. We can use this technology to explore through online website such as: wikis, myspace, facebook, and etc. For the corporate level, they also use the internet to find the person that fit in the position that they are looking for. According to the article “Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting”, the Crawford-Hentz says, “And I hit upon his profile, and I sent him this e-mail saying: 'Hi, Alfred, I found your profile on line. And we have a position that I think may be of interest to you.’”

What are the benefits of these technologies to society? Be specific
This social networking brings and connects people together around the world. As in the article “iReport: 'Naughty Auties' battle autism with virtual interaction” it says, “So you're not going out into the real world meeting people, you're going meeting people online and in your own home, so you're perfectly relaxed. It's just a fantastic tool to use to bring people together.”

Is there a "dark side"?
Of course there is a dark side of social networking. Sometimes, I even go to the chat room and fake my identity. We don’t know if the people that we talk to also hide their identity too or not. If me met the wrong person over the social networking website that might make people go through the wrong way such as drug, porn and other bad situation.

Make sure to include your opinion of the way these technologies might evolve in the future.
Well, I believe that in the future social networking and virtual worlds will evolve more in our life. Everybody will sit in front of their own computer at home to work instead of working in their office. Like our class, we are staying at home and do homework or what we have to do then summit them online. However, I hope there will be less of the dark side of the social networking and virtual worlds.

Blogs vs. Wikis

Both blogs and wikis are social networking. We share information through these websites. For wikis, we can change the information that we post on the website. I can change on what other says. Other people can change on what I say. Wikis is more about the fact than personal stuff. As in Wikipedia said, “Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites.” For blogs, it’s more private. We can post whatever we want into our own blogs. Other people can only view and leave their comments in the blog. I can keep it even more private by lock my blog and only my friend can see it. Blogs connect each other through our interests. Then they can share what they know and exchange information.

In addition, you can watch the youtube video to understand more about blogs and wikis.

My New Media Class – So Far

What kinds of technologies are part of the new media?
Of course, computer, iPhone/iPod, internet, and many other things are parts of the new media technologies. According to the article “The New Media Technologies: Overview and Research Framework”, the Five C’s represents the meaning of the new media: communication, collaboration, community, creativity, and convergence. All new media are creativity of the design that creates new inventions. We can communicate to each other by using telephone/cell phone. We also communicate with other by using internet (social networking). In Wiki, we collaborate our ideas and put it together. Blogs creates a small community and connect people to each others.

How important is the Internet to the new media?
The Internet is very important to the new media. However, if the computer doesn’t exist, we might not even hear the word “Internet”. It is playing a big role for computer. The Internet connects computer around the world. If there is no Internet, then we don’t have any kinds of Website. No wikis. No blogs. No online shopping. Nothing. Internet helps us to communicate with other faster and anywhere we want too.

Why and how are the new media replacing / enhancing the old media?
I think the new media is not totally replacing the old media. The old media still exists as before. I always see people reading newspaper every day. Students still use text books. Elder don’t know much about how to use the new technologies. However, the new media is helping us to get information in a faster way from the old media. In order to do research, we go online and search for information through the Internet rather searching the information from the book. Somehow, in the next generation, the new media might totally replace the old media. Kids are studying by playing games through computer. My generation becomes old, then the old media are replacing by the new media.
