My New Media Class – So Far

What kinds of technologies are part of the new media?
Of course, computer, iPhone/iPod, internet, and many other things are parts of the new media technologies. According to the article “The New Media Technologies: Overview and Research Framework”, the Five C’s represents the meaning of the new media: communication, collaboration, community, creativity, and convergence. All new media are creativity of the design that creates new inventions. We can communicate to each other by using telephone/cell phone. We also communicate with other by using internet (social networking). In Wiki, we collaborate our ideas and put it together. Blogs creates a small community and connect people to each others.

How important is the Internet to the new media?
The Internet is very important to the new media. However, if the computer doesn’t exist, we might not even hear the word “Internet”. It is playing a big role for computer. The Internet connects computer around the world. If there is no Internet, then we don’t have any kinds of Website. No wikis. No blogs. No online shopping. Nothing. Internet helps us to communicate with other faster and anywhere we want too.

Why and how are the new media replacing / enhancing the old media?
I think the new media is not totally replacing the old media. The old media still exists as before. I always see people reading newspaper every day. Students still use text books. Elder don’t know much about how to use the new technologies. However, the new media is helping us to get information in a faster way from the old media. In order to do research, we go online and search for information through the Internet rather searching the information from the book. Somehow, in the next generation, the new media might totally replace the old media. Kids are studying by playing games through computer. My generation becomes old, then the old media are replacing by the new media.
